Last week I shared with you all some of the delightful chicks that we hope to see in upcoming weeks, but these birds are not always successful on their first attempt at breeding due to predation. Feral cats are a huge problem in Australia and they do take a lot of the eggs. Both parents share sitting duties equally.

An empty Pied Oystercatcher nest should mean that there are now chicks and that the parents have been sitting on a clutch of two eggs for twenty eight days. Some nests had clearly been there for some time and had contained eggs until recently. This is typical behaviour for a pair of Pied Oystercatchers that have eggs.

The Emu Dromaius novaehollandiae is Australia’s largest bird standing at up to 2 metres (6 foot 6 inches) tall. They are also inquisitive, so if you observe some near the edge of the road and you want to gain their attention you can turn on your car indicators and they will often investigate rather than run off.

Last Sunday was Grant’s birthday and we decided to bird our local area in search of something special. I noticed a silhouette and we investigated and we got our first Pallid Cuckoo for the year. We discovered another juvenile not far away, so other species have had their eggs swapped out.

Last weekend we went by vehicle to check on the Pied Oystercatchers that breed along that stretch of beach and there has been continued egg loss over the past few weeks. They are persistent at laying eggs and despite the loss of all the eggs from our last visit there were five new eggs. Pied Oystercatcher shading an egg.

It was actually ten years ago that we observed our first Painted Snipe in Australia on Grant’s birthday! You just have to go birding on your birthday really, because you never know what might show up. Langi Crossing is always a great place for birds, but they do vary on each visit.
