While the Black-throated Laughingthrush is native to Southeast Asia, it is also kept at the Toronto Zoo and has its own web page there. However, as the zoo is (at the time of writing this post) closed due to covid, you still have to leave Canada and come to Southeast Asia to see it.

Sure, this is normal occurrence across much of Europe and southwest Asia but this particular tale comes from out on the east end of New York’s Long Island, in the town of Medford, where this happened to an unsuspecting non-birder, Celeste Rovner. That’s a lot more fun than a bird that sneaked out of the zoo, isn’t it?

Of course, I’d already encountered tons of Javan Mynas mixed with a few Commons. Storks are always a welcome sight, but listers cannot in good conscience count these birds, which hang out in the wetlands during the day and fly back to the zoo every night. Guess the grub is good at the zoo.

Elliot’s Laughingthrush is named after Daniel Giraud Elliot (1835 – 1915), an American ornithologist who apparently did not really do anything related to laughingthrushes and/or Asia but was rich. Louis, USA, you can see the species at your local zoo. Maybe that was enough. Maybe this can be delegated to some interns?
