I thought it was an urban myth that animal shelters would actually turn over unwanted animals to laboratories for research, but apparently not. Montcalm County has taken a step towards ending its relationship with an animal research facility. In return, the company can use some of the unwanted dogs for animal research.

Portugal is NOT known for its kindness to animals so this is a significant development for a Portuguese city. Under Portuguese legislation, stray and unwanted animals that are kept in municipal kennels, even healthy ones, can be put down after eight days if unclaimed. From the Portugal News Online.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's new budget is calling for the euthanization of animals after only three days. It's not the animals' fault that they have found themselves in this situation. It's the constant and conscious culture of killing animals in this society that I absolutely hate. Thanks to LA Unleashed for the story.

Most of their animals get put down. Researchers told the Tribune that the testing gave the shelter animals "a second chance at life," while records obtained by the Tribune revealed that the labs had killed 116 of the 190 strays last year. Only 74 animals survived the research process to be adopted out as pets.
