After our two-week-long familiarity trip across Uganda, we ten visiting birders were tired. So we made our way to the grounds of the Uganda Wildlife Education Center , a former zoo that now rehabilitates injured animals. If he hadn’t seen it in Uganda it was a good bird! Uganda’s first Pectoral Sandpiper.

They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!).

For there is no species that I had more comprehensively failed to see than the Leopard. I had spent six months living in suitable rainforest habitat in Uganda, and been on innumerable safari walks , drives and cruises were they might be found. Leopards were problem species for me. The cats are, almost to a species, elusive.
