Busch Gardens® Tampa’s black rhinoceros, Forest, enjoyed some pumpkins in preparation for Halloween. As part of his daily enrichment, the animal care team provided several pumpkins for Forest! Black rhinos are considered endangered by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, and are found in central and southern Africa.

Today is the United Nations World Wildlife Day, a time to celebrate and raise awareness of the living world around us. We haven’t seen the reason yet, but suddenly you could have palpated a tension in the air that made the zebras step away and even one female Ostrich stand up… Then the Lord of the waterhole came – the White Rhinoceros.

Busch Gardens participates in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP) to ensure genetic diversification among threatened and endangered animals in zoological facilities. The birth brings the total white and black rhino population at the adventure park to eight.

They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!).

If you want to know what happened on August 31, 1984, I can name at least one event: In the Padang-Sugihan Wildlife Reserve in South Sumatra province, a Large Frogmouth was mobbed by a Greater Racket-tailed Drongo, as described here. At between 4 pm and 6 pm, to be exact. Lucky him, right? Though he ended up dead anyway.
