Animals for research purposes are coming from municipal shelters, breeders and the greyhound trade. Unwanted farm dogs are another source. In 2007, 394 dogs died during procedures for canine and human research. None of the animal shelters contacted by the Herald Sun have come across ex-research dogs in need of a home.

I thought it was an urban myth that animal shelters would actually turn over unwanted animals to laboratories for research, but apparently not. Montcalm County has taken a step towards ending its relationship with an animal research facility.

Brief commentary follows this e-mail I received regarding greyhounds, animal rights and Ireland. Back then I was a young child and never thought any different about greyhounds or indeed any other animal. He would not return for many hours. Thinking back still touch's me to the point where I feel so guilty-but I knew no different.

He asked me if he could get the kitten but I argued with him and told him that I know that Tj would hate it and I did not want her to feel unwanted. When he came, I researched how to introduce two cats and made a plan. I asked him not to get the kitten but after much persuasion, he ended up getting it anyway.
