A New York Times story that ran in 2001 about a homeless dog wandering around a suburban part of New York City, struck a chord with me. They offered him hand-outs and cared enough about him, not to call Animal Control and risk having him picked up and sent to a shelter where his fate would be doomed.

Caring for the homeless cat population in Los Angeles, FixNation , offers free spay and neuter services to caregivers of community cats. The group, founded in 2007, also provides a free, full-time spay and neuter clinic for homeless stray and feral cats, plus low-cost, spay and neuter services for tame pet cats.

Like every dog they are vulnerable to homelessness and mistreatment. However, any breed of dog that has been abused, neglected, or homeless may be aggressive to humans or other dogs. Pit Bull Rescue Central (PBRC) is a great resource for pit bull owners and those that find a homeless or lost pit bull.

I'm doing my best in an imperfect world to respect the rights of other sentients, and I have heard vegans say that sanctuaries--and not pet ownership--will be the only way out of subjugation for cats and dogs. who chooses not to take in animals because he respects them, and I agreed theoretically.
