At an NYC puppy shelter a few weeks ago, my mind was just about made up when I met Chester – The cutest Lab puppy I’d ever seen. His large pouty eyes, silky fur-coat, and silly little paws on which he fumbled all over the hay-covered kennel, lured me in like a dog to a bone. The following is a guest post from Kevin Sloan.

It was bit of a traumatic experience for me and I vowed to never own an animal again. But as I began my search for a new family member at local shelters, I noticed that something was terribly wrong—I couldn’t hold the dogs I was considering adopting for more than 5 minutes before going into a sneezing convulsion.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW; www.ifaw.org ) has compiled some tips on how to keep pets happy and healthy in the cold months ahead. Not all dogs were born with lush fur coats that keep off the winter chill. If you find a lost or stray pet, please call your local animal control or nearest animal shelter.

Children are also reminded to, for instance: Keep your new dog on a leash because it will keep him or her safe from getting lost, being hit by a car, getting in fights or catching diseases from other animals. Sweets may look appealing to pets, but candy – especially chocolate – can be downright toxic to animals. If you believe your pet has ingested a harmful item, call your veterinarian or the Animal Control hotline immediately. This is especially important for pets with black fur, since they are a target for pranksters.
