The book is chiefly about how people have conceptualized and studied birds, but there is an underlying theme, the changing ways in which our Western culture has viewed animals, nature and God. The difference seems to be that Selous had previously killed birds and she had not. It’s a huge scope for a 338-page book.

The falcon hunt took place in the quiet, picturesque Flemish countryside south of Bruges, on the property of Adolph of Cleves, Lord of Ravenstein. The horse landed on the young duchess, breaking her back but not killing her outright.

When I see a band I imagine something slipping beneath it and trapping the bird, I’ve seen photos of birds with so many bands it looks like they’re wearing stockings, and then there’s the awful story of Violet , whose band eventually killed her. One of the animal keepers brought her to me, and I put her in my clinic.

Contemplating California Condors

The World Center for Birds of Prey ( The Peregrine Fund ) in Boise, Idaho, most famous for its Peregrine Falcons , also has a vital population of California condors. They reside there at the top of a small mountain sanctuary as mythical as my first remembrances of ancient thunderbirds, living, mating, and raising young.
