Well, she apparently did such a great job convincing the folks at the Minnesota Book Awards that you can claim to love animals and then send them to slaughter, that not only was she a finalist for their award, but she won it. In her blog yesterday she wrote of her experience accepting the award, and who she thanked and didn't thank.

About a quarter of the world’s Brown Bears live in Europe (including the Russian part of it), some 55,000, divided into nine separate and evermore fragmented populations – some of them dangerously tiny, a dozen or two dozen animals only. After all, bears are solitary and elusive animals. The cuisine was magnificent, especially lamb.

And I believe that in most cases man is morally justified in thus reducing the satisfactions of the food animals. The issue is: Does he gain more value than he would experience if he let them live?

I refuse to eat pork, but eat grass-fed beef when I am making Persian food, and certain forms of chicken and lamb with other ethnic foods I consume. If a person is in a discipline in which he or she is attempting to understand a culture or wants to experience a culture, vegetarianism is nearly impossible.
