Hunters go to Africa to shoot lions, and this is without question a good thing; for birds, for ecosystems, and for lions in general! The interests of those working for conservation and those working for animal rights and animal welfare don’t always perfectly align like you might think they do. You do a lot of good.

The definition of the word HUNT is “to chase or search for game or other wild animals for the purpose of catching or killing.” One is defined as catching or killing and the other as keeping from injury. Of course, by now most people know they have been slaughtered by hunters for their ivory.

In responding to Suzie’s post defending wildlife rehabilitation I began to think again about the areas in which animal rights and animal welfare overlap with the field of conservation, and the ways in which they don’t. Not from an environmental perspective but from a “don’t you like animals?”

I finally read SPECIESISM , by Joan Dunayer, which was published a couple of years after ANIMAL EQUALITY , which I wrote about a couple of weeks ago. Whenever the media report that someone has killed "an endangered animal" or "an endangered species," they too confuse an individual with a species.
