For one – and we’ll stick with this one issue for now – because sometimes the public decides to keep the animal they have found, just for a little while. A pet cat raising orphaned ducklings!

In the Far East they keep birds of prey which they use to capture other animals such as foxes and rabbits. The quail, guans, ducks and pheasant are hunted for their meat. Millions die each year that are hit by cars, crash into windows, wind turbine blades or at the paws of domestic cats.

An Animal Person reader wrote me with the following question: There are many species of cichlids in Lake Victoria that are on the verge of extinction, and most are hardy and small enough to be kept in an aquarium. I intend to stick with rescuing rabbits from now on.) The analogy to mammals we rescue is interesting; it's a good point.
