The combined effects of hunting, habitat loss and predation by introduced animals like rats and mongoose have extirpated the species from some islands and reduced numbers significantly on others.

I’ve always been interested in wild versions of farm animals and was lucky enough to see both species this year and to me the grey junglefowl is like that cool hipster band to the red junglefowl’s worldwide pop smash – it makes less effort and is less colourful but somehow understatement makes it more interesting. It was wonderful!

The Parakeet of City Streets, the Monk Parakeet

Department of Agriculture’s Animal Damage Control unit tried to remove them, sparking a fight with Mayor Washington’s neighbors, who also loved the parakeets, and the establishment of the Harold Washington Memorial Parrot Defense Fund. And, there I saw the famous Monk Parakeet nests saved by Mayor Harold Washington. and Sam Logue.

Stalking a Kiwi Icon

Searching for kiwi is unlike spotlighting that I’ve done while looking for nocturnal animals in the past. Hes previously poked albatrosses with sticks in Hawaii, provided target practice for gulls in California, chased monkeys up and down hills Uganda, wrestled sharks in the Bahamas and played God with grasshopper genetics in Namibia.
