The Eurasian Collared-Dove ( Streptopelia decaocto ) was first released in the New World on the island of New Providence, in the Bahamas. This is an animated map made from Christmas Bird Count data of Eurasian Collared-Dove sightings from 1987 through 1997 2. They often tend to displace native species, whether they be plant or animal.

Snowy Owl irruptions are relatively predictable and often huge, with birds arriving as far south of their normal breeding range as Florida and the Bahamas. The white feathers of Snowy Owls allow you to see the blood from their most recent kills still staining their plumage, which is about as metal as any wild animal is likely to get.

I’ve always been interested in wild versions of farm animals and was lucky enough to see both species this year and to me the grey junglefowl is like that cool hipster band to the red junglefowl’s worldwide pop smash – it makes less effort and is less colourful but somehow understatement makes it more interesting.

These are extremely large stick structures (some articles compare the largest ones to the size of a car) that are usually populated by multiple breeding pairs in separate chambers. Monk Parakeet is the only parrot species that builds its own nest. Some articles speculate that the nests offer protection against the cold.

The birds are now breeding in the area, but are quite happy to keep coming to the daily feeding station in groups of over 100 birds. The people, the birds, the animals, the history, all combined to form an energy that left you wanting more. I have saved these last two, for they are indeed my favorite birds of the year.

They are found in the Bahamas, Cuba, the Cayman Islands, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, the Turks and Caicos, Antigua, Barbuda and Jamaica. The combined effects of hunting, habitat loss and predation by introduced animals like rats and mongoose have extirpated the species from some islands and reduced numbers significantly on others.
