You wouldn't expect Pollan or Oprah to deliver a vegan or animal rights message and they didn't. Alicia Silverstone was on the show as a spokesperson for the health benefits and other benefits of veganism. Alicia (laughing): Well, I'd have to see the cows and the chickens. would you eat them)? What do you think?

Free Speech may be a noble ideal, but perhaps we are better served by thinking of it not only as a right but also as a privilege. They certainly depict cruelty to animals, right? Or don't they because animals we use for food are not thought by the masses as victims of cruelty? Need it be gratuitous to be offensive?

Twice in the past 24 hours (once here and once on Stephanie's blog, in the comments )I have come across the following statement: "[insert animal here] are safe from predators, get fed regularly, and are better off on farms than if they were in 'the wild.'" The choice isn't the wild or the farm. Yes, that's true. Besides, we have choices.

But the cow part? The irony of the cow part is that much of this Oprah show was about slavery. The irony of the inclusion of the cow in The Girl Effect is that it swaps one form of slavery for another. And 99% of the population (as in, 1%, I believe, are vegans) doesn't care. Human slavery, of course. Sex slavery.

There is a general consensus that vegetarianism and veganism are different philosophically. The underlying premise is that you can know what is right (such as me knowing what's right then eating cow flesh in the form of filet mignon for a year), but that by no means will necessarily manifest in your behavior.
