Did you see that Change.org now has an Animal Welfare page? I think this is fabulous because Stephanie Ernst (the AW blogger is Stephanie Feldstein, so be careful referring to "Stephanie," or to the blogger with the pit bull!) is clearly someone who advocates for animal rights.

A couple of years ago I wrote about whether it's a good use of my time to be a purist about the term "animal rights" when most of the world doesn't have the same understanding of the term as I do. would call HSUS an animal rights group (after all, HSUS doesn't even do that).

In " 'Animal Rights:' Pernicious Nonsense for Both Law & Public Policy ," Massachusetts attorney and "sportsman" Richard Latimer is on the mark with some concepts, and way off with others. Now, I know you're saying: That's not what animal rights is. For an attorney, that's awfully weak.

Because I've been thinking about the evolution of my own thinking--and languaging--regarding animal rights. Both animal rights groups and animal welfare groups use "compassion" frequently. Then again, so do people who kill animals for a living. Why all the quotation marks?

It's one that's brought on, no doubt, by the acts of vandalism and intimidation of radical animal-rights groups, but I think it also serves to insulate the research community from any responsibility it might otherwise have to increase transparency and public engagement with the work. It "guarantees humane treatment?" Maybe on paper.

In the past I have attributed some of this conflict to differences between the conservation mindset and that of animal rights/animal welfare. I’ll refer you to Charlie’s impassioned essay against game hunting again, and you can see what I’m talking about.
