Jumping out of my “Beat” today

I am actually jumping out of my assigned beat area, to share some photos from my trip to Kodiak Island Alaska. In addition to the Grizzly Bears , I was able to photograph Woodland Buffalo , squirrels, deer, Red Fox , and even a herd of Yaks. Fox Sparrow. The number one bird on my list was the iconic Horned Puffin. Pacific Wren.

This all came back to me as I read Learning the Birds: A Midlife Adventure because author Susan Fox Rogers was one of the two birders to find the Ames Henslow’s Sparrow. by Susan Fox Rogers. It’s the subject of the eleventh essay in this collection, almost smack in the middle of the 22 pieces that comprise the book.

I hope that the scrutiny of Palin will do something about Alaska's unfair and cruel treatment of wolves. It's ballooned to 5,000 now.

Birding Santa Cruz Island

Aside from birds, people really seem to like Island Foxes. An endangered species success story, these ungodly cute animals are now thriving after their populations (most Channel Islands have an Island Fox population) scraped against the brink of extinction for years. They are small and adorable. Many are fearless.

Alaska’s long-lining fleet now must have bird-deterrent measures in place, which means a lot more Laysan, Black-footed and Short-tailed Albatross are not being injured or drowned in fishing gear. Aleutian Cackling Geese on Buldir Island, Alaska, where they made their final stand. is on a boat in the Aleutian chain.
