A straight shot to my bird feeder. My yard is a birding hotspot. The feeder dangles from a clothesline between two pine trees, beckoning a range of bird varieties. Nothing was on my agenda for that afternoon. Normally, when someone asks about this particular hobby I tell them definitively that I am a “birder.”

I had an interesting email come in this winter: “I have been photographing birds for the past 8 years and have been confronted by numerous “Rude Birders.” We can really ask the question and get a definitive answer from one. My practice has normally been 6-10 feet from the subject since i have a 300mm lens.

The trick is to see the bird before you get too close. The easiest way to eliminate the Common Snipe is by noting the white trailing edge to the secondaries, but since this is not always conspicuous, it is not reliable if you fail to spot it on a fast moving, zig-zagging bird. Two male-plumaged birds were seen in this paddy.
