Then it’s a matter of doing a little research on the internet to find who rang the bird you saw, and then emailing the details of your sighting. They are of the race islandica , a sub species of the nominate race, limosa. Once again I did my internet research and managed to contact the person who had ringed the gull.

In the past there has been a lot of research done using satellite tracking to find out the exact routes that a variety of larger migratory shorebirds take and there were some amazing discoveries made. Once again these tiny 5 gram satellite tags were deployed and since 2011 they have tracked the incredible journeys of several Cuckoos.

Growing up within an hour of one of the world’s premier shorebird destinations -- West Coast National Park in South Africa -- helped for sure. Universities like Harvard, Columbia and Cornell regularly use the research facility. On the grounds, Punta Cana has preserved a 1,500 acre Ecological Park that is an excellent place to view the local endemic bird species and enjoy nature. Additionally the foundation provides a facility for important biological field work.

This species is not only usually the earliest, but the most common. What’s remarkable about this species is what we don’t see here: the extremely long migration that this species makes, with some individuals traveling from Sub-Saharan Africa to Greenland and back every year. Get yours today!

For decades researchers have made annual trips out to the Tortugas to catch Sooty Terns, attach tiny silver bands to their legs with unique identification numbers, and then set them free again. The park is home to not one, not two, but large three colonies of breeding seabirds: the Brown Noddy , Magnificent Frigatebird , and Sooty Tern.

But first, not thinking of proper research, I made no difference between questions, nor were the mentioned destinations really visited or only dreamed about.
