Under that impossibly blue sky of Africa. The Feral Pigeon and the House Sparrow came the day after, when in the lush green oasis of the Sanitas nursery tea garden I noticed the announcement of the next meeting of the Botswana Bird Club. Everything around you is new and the World is exciting again, or was it simply Africa?

Blue-cheeked Bee-eaters are something of a speciality, breeding here before flying off to Africa for the winter. Laughing Dove and Feral Pigeon were present, as were Hoopoe and Little Bee-eaters, but it was the wheatears that stood out. The location was a good spot to see Arabian Oryx, a species I hoped to see but didn’t.

Thus, the cattle we raise for meat and dairy are sometimes called Bos taurus while the extinct wild form is always called Bos primigenius. This is not entirely unknown among domestic animals, but many domesticates have no living wild version. Bringing animals that would require feed and water at that early stage would have been unwise.

Beyond that, I will try and initiate a business trip to northern Sumatra (Indonesia), and there is a certain chance (although the probability is below 50%) that work might take me to Africa somewhere south of the Sahara.
