While Uganda does not have the international reputation of its neighbors Kenya and Tanzania, the experience there is no less extraordinary – and in many ways, particularly for the birder, it’s even more so. It’s still hard for me to wrap my head around this trip, my first on a brand new continent.

The Bearded Woodpecker (Mkuze, South Africa) does not really look any more bearded than many other woodpeckers. The species name “tukki” is not derived from a beloved but now extinct Eastern European car brand but from the Sumatran word for woodpecker. It is the most widespread woodpecker in Africa, claims the HBW.

That larger clade is in turn sister to a clade containing the four remaining totipalmate bird families, which do still seem to be related, and which needed a new order name once pelicans were removed. But meanwhile, let’s look at the four avian families that comprise the brand new order Suliformes.

It’s my fantasy and it’s yours: Quit the job, say good-bye to the family, and bird. I get my own idea of the lunacy of Gooddie’s quest when I talk to a friend who has birded Asia and Africa. If it were just the birds, I’d grab my bins and be on the next plane to Asia or Africa. It’s what I dream of every Monday morning.

He subsequently leaves for Peru and gets kidnapped and killed by Sendero Luminoso – the local brand of Maoists. Having learned from my Namibian experience I walked away briskly. As an aside, outside Africa “bird parties” are called “mixed feeding flocks” – it says it all, doesn’t it?

This may be before the Fairy-Wrens developed the ability to detect Cuckoo young in the nest, an ability recently described by ornithologists, or this family may be one of the 60% who don’t detect Cuckoo chicks. It is co-branded with the Natural History Museum of London, whose collections are the source of the artwork.
