We were the type of family that bought the best dog food, dog insurance , BPA free chew toys, etc. It was the first time I really wouldn’t see my pups on a regular basis or even be able to adopt one (or a few) of my own. One of my favorite experiences was the chance to work with Shelby, a dog that was absolutely terrified of men.

But as I began my search for a new family member at local shelters, I noticed that something was terribly wrong—I couldn’t hold the dogs I was considering adopting for more than 5 minutes before going into a sneezing convulsion.
