The Brown and Peruvian Pelicans

The Brown Pelican and the Peruvian Pelican are closely related and once were considered the same species. They are indeed very similar in all plumage stages, but the Peruvian Pelican is nearly twice as big as its northern counterpart. Brown Pelicans in non-breeding plumage. Birding Lake Kerkini, Greece: Three Lazy Days

The northern half of the lake added Corn Bunting , European Turtle Dove , Dalmatian Pelican , Purple Heron , Eurasian Hobby , Eurasian Golden Oriole , Eurasian Green Woodpecker , and only the first of the several Masked Shrikes of the tour (cover photo by Kostas Papadopoulos).

I tried many times with varying degrees of success – the Dalmatian Pelicans ( below ) were one of my better efforts. It was the advent of lightweight, mirrorless cameras that saw me finally abandon digiscoping, while the Panasonic camera I used didn’t have a great pixel count.

Burrowing Owls of Cape Coral

You can tell which abandoned lots host owls by a small roped off area with the tell-tale t-bars that the owls perch upon. But on the morning when my dad and I found them, they were clustered around the entrance to their burrows at the Pelican Boulevard Baseball Fields, a well-known spot for the birds.

Only for Dogs and Birders – Kalamas Delta, Greece

The next one, the lagoon of Vatatsa (at the eastern side of the Valtos Bay), offered a lot more egrets, one Squacco Heron , two distant Dalmatian Pelicans and quite a few little things chirping from their hiding places in the tamarisk bushes by the road. Yet, beside a few Little and one Great Egret , a raft of Eurasian Coots , no birds.

Like many others, this village was totally abandoned and only recently repopulated, with a current population of only 18 people. Dalmatian Pelican – Pelecanus crispus. My tour list (late September… also, birders were a minority within a group): 1. Mute Swan – Cygnus olor. Pygmy Cormorant – Microcarbo pygmeus.
