There are few places in the United States where simply driving around can leave you with a list of 30+ species, many of them large and spectacular. Cape Coral has a remarkable population of Burrowing Owls , cute little stilt-legged beasts we usually associate with the western part of the continent.

Further down the road, we reach a derelict building with a large veranda hidden among the trees – an abandoned hunting lodge (if I were in a situation to invest, I would choose to upgrade this into a luxury wildlife lodge). Birds included common species such as Black Drongos , Jungle Babblers and a Hoopoe.

The United States built Fort Jefferson on Garden Key between 1846 to 1875 to protect its interests in the Gulf of Mexico, but was later abandoned without ever being fully completed. Loggerhead Key is a reliable site for the Antillean race of Short-eared Owl. A first impression of Garden Key on the approach to the tiny isle.

In songbirds, by contrast, both the male and female can contribute equally to the very important job of incubating and protecting the egg. Since both eggs and chicks are nest-bound and highly vulnerable, while one parent is off in search of food, the nest can be robbed (probably by some owl). All the nurturing has to come from mom.

The thought of an Oriole foraging in bare winter branches is as foreign as a Petrel on a pool and yet, there it was in my yard picking through an abandoned squirrel’s nest for what appeared to be spiders. A trip to the coastal plain may net you up to seven species of warblers, from the omnipresent Yellow-rumps to Chats and Cape Mays.
