I know about the common mistakes people make when they find young birds, assuming that because they’re on the ground with no other birds in sight they must be abandoned or in need of rescue. The chickadee that I discovered on the sidewalk was suffering from dehydration and hypothermia.

It's impersonal and hideously ugly and the animals suffer greatly. And regardless of how you treat someone when they're live and regardless of how you kill them, if you don't need to kill them and you're doing so merely to please your palate, how do you justify what you're doing? It's cruel. No argument here.

It is asking the burger-stuffer to come clean ; to show just why it is that his greed should be indulged in this way, and just where he fits into the scheme of things, that he can presume to kill again and again for the sake of a solitary pleasure that creates and sustains no moral ties.

I also watched a red fox bury her mate after a cougar had killed him. Sometimes a chimpanzee, usually an adult male, will dance at a waterfall with total abandon. to live out their lives in peace, absent the abuse they had suffered in the entertainment industry. They all stood vigil for a time, nodded their heads, and flew off.

Though she hadn’t managed to kill anyone yet, I wasn’t about to roll the dice on whether she really did have some kind of predator instinct. As I skulked around my own house, all I could picture was Emily tearing Kermie limb from limb, then suffering a grisly death from ingesting the poison that ran through Kermie’s froggy veins.
