Tragically, I never saw any birds near the nest later on – I guess they abandoned it, decided to quit procreating, or just got eaten by some other bird or cat. But indeed they vanish somewhere once the people pretending to try and catch fish appear. The male at work.

The Brown and Peruvian Pelicans

Both pelicans have a very specialized foraging strategy that depends on abundant fish near the surface. They dive-plunge to scoop-in fish in schools with its long bill and expandable throat pouch. Changes in fish abundance and location near the surface has caused catastrophic die-offs in the Peruvian Pelican.

Raven vs. Osprey and Other Raptor Battles

My attention was drawn upward by the elegant flying-knife form of an Osprey bearing a large fish. As I watched a third bird joined them, or more accurately, they closed in on it – it was none other than the Osprey, still carrying the fish. It flared its wings, and the Osprey flared to match but refused to abandon the fish.

The adults move to flocks, there may be two or three of them, that hang out mostly far off shore in the larger part of the lake, abandoning their embayments or otherwise protected areas. The tend to stay asea, bobbing and rolling in the surf, staying away form shore and presumably eating small fish. Then one day they are gone.

He is happy the bluebird has returned and he hopes that it will nest by his house in “Downy’s cell,&# that is, the abandoned hole of a Downy Woodpecker. Fish & Wildlife comes in response to a lawsuit brought by the Center for Biological Diversity. Burroughs says what he means and you can tell that he really means it.
