A handful Animal Person readers since May of 2006, when I started this then-daily blog, have asked me if I've read Joan Dunayer. And now that I've read Animal Equality and begun Speciesism , I think I know why. Dunayer devotes a chapter each to the language used in hunting, zoos, "marine parks," vivisection and "animal agriculture."

To the Editor: “ Getting Bacon the Hard Way: Hog-Tying 400 Pounds of Fury ” (front page, June 21), about Texas hog hunters, illustrated the barbarity of hunting with dogs. As the dogs tear chunks of flesh from the terrified pig, the hunters undoubtedly feel proud of their accomplishment.

I followed his call, but so did Emily The Hunter. He started frolicking with abandon in the dried green moss at the base of Bob, our resident Spathophylum. The race was on; I had to find the frog, whom I named Kermie, before my vicious feline was able to sink her claws into him. There is a God, I thought.
