Conservation efforts have been sufficiently successful for the bird’s status to be downlisted, in 2018, from Critically Endangered to Endangered. In 2018, there were 1,745 birds living in 92 different zoos and collections. Such an intimate encounter with one of the world’s rarest birds was a memorable experience.

In 2018, I read an article in Birding magazine by Jeff R. Manker’s thesis is that ornithology is an excellent gateway to students becoming science majors in college and, more broadly and longer-term, conservation-minded citizens. What was the response to your Birding article in 2018? I got about 50 email responses.

The Lab also acts as the heart and soul for the very popular (and often addictive) citizen science gem known as eBird. It was easy enough to participate, all anyone had to do was watch birds and record the number of species identified using eBird. We logged an awesome 225 species! More than 680 species identified!

Zamorano University may be regarded as one of the crown jewels of Latin American higher education, particularly in the areas of agriculture, environmental management, and food science, but this idyllic campus excels for more reasons than simply academics. We even missed a few easy species for this site, such as Blue-and-white Mockingbird.

It’s not often that we have the opportunity to glimpse the home life of albatrosses, nor of any seabird species. For most seabird species, the male takes the first shift and the male and female then alternate, but the period of time for each shift varies according to species. What about incubation shifts? Who is it for?

I imagine the female bosses the male around, but maybe I am anthropomorphizing there based on my experience in recently working on an apartment with my wife. Taking photos of such a rare species is a bit of a double-edged sword. This Grey-capped Pygmy Woodpecker in particular is a species I would like to get much better photos of.
