My 2018 Great Backyard Bird Count

I hope everyone participated in at least one day of the four day Great Backyard Bird Count of 2018. There were Black Phoebes hawking insects around the ponds … Ruby-crowned Kinglets foraging in the trees… and a male Bushtit collecting nesting material. Fun birding!

Predicting My Next Five Queens Birds

Arctic Tern : There were multiple records of this species in June of 2018 out at Breezy Point and they just weren’t around when I was out there. There was one at Breezy Point in the summer of 2018 and another one showed up at Jamaica Bay last summer. Yellow-headed Blackbird is a gorgeous bird with a horrible voice.

A pair of hoopoe (Wiedenhoppe) porcelain figurines produced in the early eighteenth century by the Meissen Manufactury from the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It all seemed too fantastical to be true. Of course, hoopoes do exist, though I’ve yet to see a real one myself.
