We usually keep a list of the birds that we see along the way to break the boredom! Sadly in June 2018 a weed was found in the area and they had to completely close the rest area down. It does not completely solve the problem, because animals transport the burrs, but it will hopefully slow the spread. They head north!

Basically, hornbills get paid by evolution to eat fruit, digest the fleshy parts, and regurgitate or defecate the rest – a means of seed transportation that is apparently quite attractive to many plants despite the yuck factor involved. The two birds in question were a female Great Hornbill and a female Rhinoceros Hornbill, both escapees.

Herdsman Lake is very good if you only have access to public transport and will offer great birds like Blue-billed Ducks and Musk Ducks , but if you have a vehicle you should try and visit the Perth Hills National Parks and also Yanchep National Park. The water level does vary year by year and as such the bird-life also varies.
