The Italian wintering grounds are the WWF Oasis Laguna di Orbetello, where in February 2016 I was delighted to meet the flock. Despite the fact that efforts are made to ensure they are not imprinted on humans, they are naturally confiding, even friendly. The ibises were initially trained to follow a microlight aircraft over the Alps.

Altruism, Albatrosses, and Vicious Young Men

Laysan albatrosses are ocean-dwelling seabirds who have 6-foot wingspans, weigh 7-8 pounds, occasionally sleep while flying, and rarely land except to raise their chicks. The oldest Laysan albatross was last seen raising a chick on Midway Atoll in 2016, at age 66. People do not work with wildlife for fame and fortune.

What to Do at High Island When the Winds are South

There were an estimated 13,000 breeding pairs and roosting birds in 2016; additional islands have been created to support the increasing population and a raised (17-feet) walkway with observation platforms allows birders and photographers to enjoy them.

Proposed Changes to the Duck Stamp Not Well Received

The new regulations were open to comments until March 22, 2016 and received 572 comments. Modifying the art rules to include additional and appropriate bird species is an ideal way to raise that possibility. This is obviously where the FWS got the idea for their new proposed rule to alter the Duck Stamp Contest.

Backyard Beneficiaries

A brief personal digression: I moved back into the house I grew up in back in 2014, my parents vacated at the end of 2016. Thankfully, they now have a home here where they can court, build their nest, and raise their young. Life here is experiencing a boon in the face of encroaching human activity, at least in my immediate vicinity.
