The Italian wintering grounds are the WWF Oasis Laguna di Orbetello, where in February 2016 I was delighted to meet the flock. Such an intimate encounter with one of the world’s rarest birds was a memorable experience. Many have been shot since the project started, despite a great deal of publicity raising awareness of the birds.

I couldn’t help thinking this–me, the anthropomorphism hater– as I watched a pair of Philippine Eagles tend their nest, raise a chick, and tear monkeys apart in Bird of Prey: The Story of the Rarest Eagle on Earth , a well-crafted, beautifully filmed documentary with a mission. The Philippine Eagle has a kind face.

There were an estimated 13,000 breeding pairs and roosting birds in 2016; additional islands have been created to support the increasing population and a raised (17-feet) walkway with observation platforms allows birders and photographers to enjoy them. This was the High Island Experience, I was told. It was amazing.

The concept of a big year gained significant attention through books, such as “The Big Year” by Mark Obmascik, which chronicled the experiences of birders participating in competitive big years.

Our first birding experiences with UK ducks after so long was frustrating when they all seemed to be tail up! One of the big changes in the UK birding scene is that in 1994 people would have driven across the UK to see a Little Egret and in 2016 they are abundant! Even a Great Egret hardly raises an eyebrow nowadays!
