The Collaborative List 2017 – January.

For 2017, in keeping with all the top businesses, the list will be refreshed and re-branded. Last year they shared over 1200 checklists and managed to achieve a stunning total of 2647 species from 32 countries. Last year’s magnificent total of 2647 species is the target to beat, but other results could prove interesting.

Thus; As at April 30 th 2017, the collaborative year total stands at 1432 , with 895 species noted this month from 164 shared checklists. 9 beats contributed their sightings (this knocks last April’s efforts of 116 lists for 672 species into a cocked hat and claws back some ground on the 30th April 2016 running total of 1707).

My Top Ten Birds of 2016

The year 2016 has been a pretty good year. I opened the year in California and even though I flew out in the evening on New Year’s Day I did see some species out there that I would otherwise not have seen for the year. Winter birding around New York City was just so-so but I did add one species to my Queens list.

Birds of Kruger National Park covers the 259 species most frequently seen in the park, about half of the total number of birds documented there. This still leaves the user flipping through sections, looking for the species in question, though I don’t think there are many species with this habitat overlap.

A Survey of U.S. Birders

The methodology section is detailed, but the highlights are that the survey was conducted online, and more than 33,000 birders completed at least part of the survey, which was conducted in 2016-2017, long before the COVID-19 pandemic. (I Thus, birders like natural areas close to home with rare species, and perhaps some ducks.
