Back then, in 2012, the motivation was to have something nice to blog about and to show Corey how the cow eats the cabbage since he was seeing too many good species too easily. The Lake of Beasts: Kerkini, Greece

With only a few more days left, 2017 was coming to a close. Birdwise, it turned out to be a good one and my year list was almost 400 species long, which made me happy… almost. Yet, we didn’t get far when a smallish falcon flew over the dyke and landed on a log in the mud. At home, I may find a new bird, perhaps two, but four?

This all started way back in 2012 and several of us continued on in 2013 , 2014 , 2015 and 2016. The black-headed Gouldian Finches have remained in the same area feeding on the grass seeds with the other finches and were our 75th bird for 2017 and the male Gouldian Finch features in the header photo.

The guide covers 747 breeding residents or regular migrants, 29 introduced species, and 160 vagrants, a total of 936 species. Honeyeaters are “active, noisy and pugnacious” and there are a lot of them–76 species–in Australia. The colored font is also used to indicate measurements, voice, and notes.
