On October 29 th 2012, “superstorm” Sandy devastated the east coast of the USA, affecting states from Florida to Maine, with severe damage in New Jersey and New York. Damage to New York included floods caused by the storm surge, power cuts and disruption to transport, including the loss of the railway line that crosses Jamaica Bay.

Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan

On the first trip in 2012 we used public transport to get there and the train conveniently gets you to Macarthur Square shopping centre and you can then get a bus that drops you right at the entrance to the park. We encountered one crossing the road in 2012, but with the cooler weather this year there was less turtle activity.

Hornsby Blue Gum Walk

On our trip to New South Wales in June we took the opportunity to return to one of the picturesque bush walks that is not too far from the city and easily reached by public transport. The train station at Hornsby is the start of the walk and there are shops nearby if you need supplies before you head off or on your return.

We searched for walks that started and ended near public transport, as we were going to get a ticket- MyMulti 3 -that would let us travel wide and far unrestricted each week. I would recommend this if you are going to be out and about and most stations have regular trains all day including Sundays.
