Wrap-Up of 2012 Big Year Birding

There were quite a few big years that took place in 2012. Perhaps the biggest big year of 2012 was in Australia. Pat O’Donnell was hoping for 600 species in Costa Rica in 2012 and he was at 539 in June and easily cleared 600 but I am not sure what his final total was. Did I miss anyone? Please let me know in the comments.

Big Year Birding Update

Seeing as it is near the midway point of the year I thought it would be nice to check in on how the blogging Big Year birders are doing thus far in 2012. It’s quite a list! Josh Vandermeulen is sitting pretty at 317 species for the year in Ontario, only 21 off the province’s record of 338, set by Glen Coady in 1996.

That is a big difference compared to the 2,000+ singing males detected in 2012, well above the recovery goal for this species set by the U.S. In the mid 1700s, fur-traders began introducing foxes up and down the Aleutian chain, in order to generate some more raw material work with. Fish and Wildlife Service.
