Seeing as it is near the midway point of the year I thought it would be nice to check in on how the blogging Big Year birders are doing thus far in 2012. Not only that, but they are doing their big year to raise money for the Houston Audubon Society and the Katy Prairie Conservancy. It’s quite a list!

©2012 Donna L. FLAP is the Fatal Light Awareness Program, located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and this is how they raise awareness. I put it in a small box for several hours, where it appeared to recover, but studies have shown that internal injuries from a strike usually kill the bird.

For my new book, due out in 2012 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, I’ve been researching sandhill crane hunting. Kills in Canada, Alaska and Mexico are not included in the count. The Sandhill Crane is no different than the Aleutian strain of Canada goose. From July 1 2008-June 30 2009 Ducks Unlimited raised 200.4

There were quite a few big years that took place in 2012. Perhaps the biggest big year of 2012 was in Australia. A new Australian Big Year Record was set by John Weigel, who did his big year to raise money for Tasmanian Devil conservation. Here are the final results, so far as I was able to figure them out.
