Here’s some data from the famous research project of Manu, Peru, giving biomass in kilograms per hectare. What we see here, however, is both: Most of the mammals at this small end of the graph are nocturnal, and there is clearly a lack of overlap in body size for many species. The trait must then be identifiable as to whether or not it exists in a certain species. For instance, in primate phylogeny, postcranial traits (bony traits of the body, not the head) are usually useless because we can’t link teeth to bodies in most cases, and the teeth drive the taxonomy (though there are some recent exceptions ).

Nineteen days later we had racked up an amazing list of 436 species, including some of Africa’s least known birds such as Congo Serpent Eagle , Yellow-footed Honeyguide , Tessmann’s Flycatcher , Yellow-bearded Greenbul , Black-collared Lovebird and much besides. We also knew we had discovered Africa’s next hot birding destination.
