UNLESS that is you get yourself down to the internationally-renowned Tambopata Research Centre in southern Peru where literally hundreds of macaws (and other parrots) congregate around a 50 meter high clay bank. That’s right – birds eating clay. Scarlet and Blue-and-Yellow Macaws Ara macao and A. Chestnut-fronted Macaws Ara severa.

The good news is that Kirtland’s Warbler numbers are up, 1,828 singing males counted in the 2011 census. I very much enjoyed the first section, which relates the history of the bird and its relationship with us, humans, from its discovery in 1851 up to the fateful Lake Mack fire and its aftermath in the 1980’s.

Hal Herzog’s “ Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat ” (Harper 2011), though fascinating, is ultimately depressing for vegans and animal rights activists. In a manner that’s Malcolm Gladwell meets Freakonomics, which is the fascinating part, Herzog investigates our beliefs and actions regarding nonhuman animals (anthrozoology).

A little bit of research when I got home unraveled the ways of publishers here and in Great Britain. The second edition, with the slightly different title Birds of Trinidad & Tobago , was published in London in 2011. Even during the breeding season the birds appear to be quite unwary of humans.

Prior research has shown that the Loons that return in a given year to a given nest on a lake somewhere in Canada or the norther tier of US states are often the same ones that were there the previous year, though with some never returning because they did not survive the trials of migration. But now there is some research on that.
