Rock & Rawhide has been working with the city facilities to help increase awareness and adoption rates since their founding in late 2011. As the only organization in New York City whose doors are open to any animal in need, AC&C rescues thousands of New York’s homeless, neglected, abused and abandoned animals each year.

Bob had agreed to finish the coastal area while Seth and I headed to College Point to see if anything was around the long-abandoned Flushing Airport. We would have liked to watch it longer but we had to get moving to cover some other areas not normally covered by the coastal crew.

What began as a regional event in Los Angeles in 2011 has expanded to include a series of local Pack Walks around the country between September 24 – 30, led by North Shore Animal League America national shelter partners and Mutt-i-grees Curriculum schools.

The road went past some ruins that had been abandoned by the town people some 100 years ago and it followed the river gorge for 10 km on its way down to the Amazon. Oh well, I guess we don’t have much to worry about since today is the end of the world on May 21st of 2011.

Through intensive conservation management however, this downwards trend was halted and the population stabilized at more or less 100 bustards until 2011. Walk to a small abandoned farm and keep on along the track, crossing a small canal via a small bridge (don’t worry about the gate) just after the farm.

The United States built Fort Jefferson on Garden Key between 1846 to 1875 to protect its interests in the Gulf of Mexico, but was later abandoned without ever being fully completed. In 2011, I had the opportunity to visit Dry Tortugas National Park and remain for several days.
