While many worked on the issue, we here at 10,000 Birds like to believe that Julie Zickefoose’s heartfelt and powerfully written blog post here on 10,000 Birds in October of 2010 had a lot to do with the tabling. Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. So, one might surmise, it’s OK if they get shot by hunters thinking they’re sandhill cranes? Over the winter, the universe lost four whooping cranes to what appears to be recreational shooting: three gunned down together in Georgia on December 30, 2010, and another in Alabama on January 28, 2011. Do all hunters realize that?
