It has been twelve weeks now since the first pair of Pied Oystercatchers attempted to breed along the stretch of beach that we survey and as with each year there have been setbacks. There was a long stretch of beach that did not have a breeding pair, but it was in amongst the vehicles and nudists that frequent the area at this time of year.

Steve Howell has spent decades of experience in the field studying the birds of Belize, Costa Rica, and especially Mexico. Checklist for Belize lists 622 species in 76 families, of which 104 are rare or accidental and four introduced. I don’t think scientific artwork holds less value when used more than once.

It breeds across Canada’s boreal forest and most winter in the Caribbean, though some spend the cold months in Central America. Experiments in the field (the famed Asa Wright Nature Center veranda) involving Bananaquits and bananas came up with numbers ranging from 7 to 16, but a tanager always came along to interfere with Bananaquits’ noisy appreciation of their namesake fruit. Even during the breeding season the birds appear to be quite unwary of humans.
