Another animal dies at the Calgary Zoo and more questions are being raised about their practices. The fatality is one in a string of animal deaths in recent years. In April 2009, unseasonably cold weather froze two whopping crane eggs. They were a part of the zoo’s breeding program for the rare birds.

When I was asked if I wanted to read Jeff Corwin's 100 HEARTBEATS (Rodale 2009) I was ambivalent. And managing means killing them, breeding them, and otherwise fiddling with their populations. And of course that premise is only possible because the animals (and everything else on the planet) are our "resources."

Other areas of New York City where the parakeets were seen in 1970 included the upper East side of Manhattan, Great Kills, Staten Island, Ellis Island and the area around the Statue of Liberty. A 2009-10 survey of Monk Parakeet nests in the greater Chicago area found 42% of the nests were in trees and 58% were in man-made structures.

Kills in Canada, Alaska and Mexico are not included in the count. Texas and North Dakota together account for 88% of the total yearly kill of sandhill cranes. Where Are You Birding this Second Weekend of March 2009? This represents 6% of the estimated mid-continental spring population of 322,700 birds for the same two decades.
