Sadly, they no longer breed in Algeria, while in Turkey no free-flying birds remain. (In Intriguingly, there are far more Bald Ibises in captivity than there are in the wild, for this is a bird that breeds readily in confinement. Bald Ibises are curious birds, for they are happy breeding in close proximity to man.

The Great Bustard Search is On (1)

Habitat destruction combined with hunting has pushed them away from their former breeding grounds. Yours truly counting birds in the Pastures of Great Bustard from the Russian made UAZ 4×4 in February 2008. Bustards are being counted in February because their breeding season starts in March. What treats do they face?

What to Do at High Island When the Winds are South

I should have known that birding High Island meant I would be 20 minutes away from a place where hundreds of thousands of shorebirds and waterbirds rest, feed, breed, and generally have a good time. I love American Avocets and I rarely see them in such marvelous breeding plumage, so I was in heaven. Clapper Rail. Back to the Flats.

The return of the Banded Lapwing

It spent its visit at the Golf Course with the Masked Lapwings Vanellus miles and the previous visit by the species had been in February 2008 and prior to that September 2005. It is unclear as to whether they have all had a good breeding season or if they are dispersing to different areas this year. How wrong we were!

Back in October 2008, in his first field job out of school, he helped a Cornell PhD student, Karl, with his dissertation on vocal communication in Green-rumped Parrotlets Forpus passerinus. You don’t really know a bird until you’ve studied it on its breeding grounds. Not good, I think – it will probably be another scorcher.
