Here’s hoping that 2017 is a much better year than 2016! I know I will be doing my best to make it so, especially from a birding perspective. I’ll bird my butt off and see what happens… I will add at least three new birds to my Queens list. I will see at least 500 species for the year.

Be careful how you Google ‘bird of paradise’! It’s the bird family that most people don’t know is a bird family. It’s the bird family that most people don’t know is a bird family. For many years it was thought the two bird families were related taxonomically.

Just looking at everyone’s lists over the years you can see how varied our birding lives can be. As usual we got out and about on New Year’s Day and got the first one hundred birds onto the list, so now it will be a little harder or it means we need to travel beyond the town of Broome!

October 23 2017: I read the text message confirming that there is indeed a Common Greenshank at Edwin B. The point is, the field guide I grabbed without hesitation was the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, 7th Edition by Jon L. Forsythe NWR.

Just looking at everyone’s lists over the years you can see how varied our birding lives can be. On Christmas Day we did a bird list around Broome and although we also found over one hundred species on both that day and on New Year’s Day the lists were quite different.
