The Italian wintering grounds are the WWF Oasis Laguna di Orbetello, where in February 2016 I was delighted to meet the flock. Such an intimate encounter with one of the world’s rarest birds was a memorable experience. The ibises were initially trained to follow a microlight aircraft over the Alps.
