Today’s topic comes from Tracy Anderson in Hawaii: what was the strangest container (or method of transport) in which you have received wildlife? In the transport box was the bat and a SpongeBob Squarepants Pineapple House – she said that’s where he slept. They showed me their wounds! Dedicated to Pat Collins.

During transport to a rehab center, one eagle made a quick escape. The other was transferred to the University of Minnesota’s Raptor Center with deep talon wounds, but was expected to do well. (Randy Hanzal, a conservation officer with the agency, snapped the remarkable photo above.).

The eagle was so hypothermic I was reluctant to put her in a transport box. In mammals, maggots eat only dead tissue and are occasionally used to debride wounds. If there is an entrance wound, there is an exit wound. Her abdominal wound looked good … or as good as a horrific wound could look.

Call and transport the bird to a bird rehabber ASAP. Even if you do not see an obvious wound, cat or dog saliva, which is full of nasty bacteria, can still get into a bird’s eyes/orifices and will eventually kill the bird; it will just die more slowly and painfully. *Emergency! Bird brought in by a cat or dog.

The day before, the day I arrived, was a transport day, and that meant the pack hadn’t been seen in the afternoon. We tried to sight and count the pack twice every day so that if any of the dogs got snared we’d know quickly and could get a vet in to dart them, free them and clean up the wound.

Security is taken very seriously in the aviation business and discretion is better than having to explain yourself to tightly wound security personnel.
