The sharp strings are a menace to passing birds – especially kites and other raptors – who cannot see them and sometimes suffer grievous, if not fatal, wounds. Unwilling to leave the suffering birds to die, they began bringing them home, asking veterinarians to make house calls, and keeping the recuperating birds on their roof.

Skye wore a long-suffering expression, while Bau-Hien – whose parents had settled in Texas after leaving Vietnam – regarded me with a mixture of fascination and alarm. The mission of wildlife rehabilitators is to return injured birds to the sky, or the sea, or wherever it is they came from. Soon the girls emerged.

The male shown in the video above, filmed at Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge, was in the process of gathering nesting material for what usually adds up to a dozen to two dozen nests! I shot this video of the male bringing in the nesting material and arranging it within the nest before flying back out to a branch to sing.

Even as a veteran wildlife rehabilitator, I could scarcely believe the sight before me. We all thought the kindest approach would be to end her suffering, but then…she raised her head and looked directly at me. National Wildlife Refuges have been underfunded since President Theodore Roosevelt created the first refuge in 1903 and Congress refused to appropriate money to manage it. Don’t miss it!
