There’s something very matter-of-fact about seeking out non-native target species. So it was almost out of a sense of duty that the group of birders parked the bus at urban Telocote Park and unloaded to walk along the concrete viaduct in search of these unwanted, but still desired, birds. It feels almost cheap.

A few of this species were at El Tapir the other day and we were very pleased to watch them zip around the Porterweed bushes. To top off the list of unusual species, we also saw two species rarely seen outside of cloud forest; Coppery-headed Emerald , and Magenta-throated Woodstar. Snowcap = Glass of Burgundy X Nonpareil candy.

By the time we reached the Upper Thomson Road we had a spent three hours sauntering through the park and had a list of over forty bird species. We had learnt from signs over the days we had been in Singapore that they have a problem with people dumping unwanted pets and we presume this to be the case in the reservoir.

Here is an AP story highlighting the impact these pharmaceutical substances are having on aquatic and avian species. For example, exposure to these substances is negatively impacting the reproductive abilities of some fish species, threatening their extinction. It's a problem for animals, particularly aquatic animals, as well.
