The southeast tip of the Florida peninsula is not well endowed with a wide variety of sparrows in winter like the rest of the southeastern United States. Barnes or Matheson Hammock will never produce sightings of any sparrow at all (and if you did, it would be a really good sighting).

For the United States, there is also a state list. The writers at 10,000 Birds span the globe, but I am particularly interested in the lists for the United States, as that is my “beat.” As of mid-October 2018, the Collaborative had submitted more than 1,700 checklists and observed 618 species in the United States.

The search for the next new bird is that much more fulfilling when you’re limited to the smallest of the arbitrary political boundaries in the United States, and the search for those birds necessitates a broad working knowledge of the county of the sort that can only be attained through experience.
